What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder where patients experience pauses in breathing or shallow breaths when they're asleep. These pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes and happen multiple times throughout the night.

The two main types of sleep apnea include:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): It's the most common type and it occurs when the tongue and throat muscles relax too much, causing a narrow or completely blocked airway.
  • Central Sleep Apnea: The brain doesn't send the necessary signals to the muscles that control your breathing.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

  • Loud snoring
  • Pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Gasping or choking sensations during sleep
  • Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability

Why Should I Treat Sleep Apnea?

  • High blood pressure
  • Increased risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Weight gain
  • Diabetes
  • A weakened immune system

Is Sleep Apnea Treatable?

Yes, sleep apnea symptoms can be managed! If you suspect you have this disorder, we'll ask you some screening questions, do an initial assessment, and recommend a take home sleep study.  We then collect and interpret the data, and if there are concerns, send the results to a sleep doctor who will provide a diagnosis and a report.

For patients who have mild to moderate sleep apnea, we can design and 3D print a custom dental sleep appliance. This appliance will gently move your lower jaw slightly forward, opening the airway to allow uninterrupted and complete breathing while you sleep.

Aside from treating sleep apnea, dental appliances alleviate snoring, letting you and your partner, enjoy a peaceful night's sleep.
